Canterbury, Kent

You may have heard of Canterbury thanks to the author Geoffrey Chaucer and his ‘The Canterbury Tales’, written between 1387 and 1400.  Today, Canterbury, located in Kent, boasts plenty of history and culture.  It was once a popular destination for ancient Romans, which you can learn more about at the Canterbury Roman Museum.  Pilgrims have been journeying there to visit the Canterbury Cathedral, one of the most spectacular cathedrals in the UK.  The wider Kent area is sometimes known as the ‘Garden of England’ as it’s brimming with orchards and hop gardens, which all come alive in the spring and summer, the ideal time to visit.

Explore the city’s literary history in the many bookshops it offers.  You will certainly find a book, old or new, to suit every taste, and you might even uncover some rare and limited editions that are perfect for gifting.  Visit the Canterbury Cathedral to learn about its 1,400 years of history and to witness the mesmerising architecture for yourself.  The River Stour runs through the city, and a walk alongside it is a beautiful and peaceful way to relax.  You can also enjoy a boat trip on the river with one of several available boat trips.

The New Forest, Hampshire

Stepping foot inside the New Forest in Hampshire can feel like entering a fairy tale, especially in spring when the forest ground is transformed into a purple carpet of heather beneath one’s feet.  At the same time, it all glows in shades of gold and amber in autumn.  Head to Beaulieu Road if you want to spend your day walking and exploring nature.  Watch out for the New Forest’s most famous residents – free-roaming ponies.  Around 5,000 of them are in the area, so the chances of spotting at least a few on your walk are high.  Exbury Gardens is another great starting point for a walk; the 20 miles of walkways will reveal three separate woods and an impressive Rothchild collection of plants and flowers.

Many award-winning beers are brewed in the New Forest Area.  You can visit the breweries – like the Ringwood Brewery – and taste some local favourites.  You can also tour where they’re made and learn about the process.  Stop at the historic Drift Inn for a break between walks, a pint of real ale and pie of the day.

If you’re after a more town-like feel while still surrounded by nature, head to Lymington, which has its own Quay and looks out onto the Isle of Wight.  You’ll find beaches (ideal for a languid afternoon stroll), independent shops and plenty of cafes.  The Elderflower restaurant serves gourmet cuisine and is famous for its chocolate dessert, while Lanes, housed in a converted chapel, is fantastic for a taste of local ingredients.

Dorking, Surrey Hills

The pretty, wooded Surrey Hills surround the historic town of Dorking.  You can choose to spend the day in the town itself or explore the nearby countryside.  On the nature side, you can visit Box Hill to get an overview of the town or head to Farnham Heath, a wildlife-rich heathland.

The lovely historic town is filled with several antique and vintage shops, should you wish to find something unique for yourself or as a gift. While there are many fantastic pubs and cafes in Dorking, the Michelin-starred Sorrel is a must-visit for a taste of contemporary fine dining.

Hampton Court Palace, where Henry VIII once resided, is not too far away. It’s a fantastic place to visit with the family or anyone interested in England’s vast royal history. The palace is not only visually stunning but also full of information and things to learn.

Soaking in the Seaside

Rye, Essex

Gilding was not unique to Egypt, however, as the Chinese used it on pottery and wooden ornaments,

Rye in East Sussex is postcard pretty.  The streets are winding and cobbled, and the buildings are low and filled with beams – many date back centuries.  St Mary’s Church, for example, originates from around the 12th century.  A day in Rye is a little bit like spending time on a film set, in the best way.

A little away from the town is the Rye Nature Reserve, made up of sprawling grassland, salt marsh, and woods.  There, you’ll find many walking routes – The Discovery Centre will help you find the best one and give you information on the wildlife to watch.  Just a 15-minute drive from Rye is Camber Sands, one of the most stunning beaches in England, pale and sprawling.  The water might not be warm enough for a dip (even in summer!), but it’s beautiful to explore nonetheless.

Back in town, wander over to Mermaid Street, where you’ll find stores selling interiors and souvenirs nestled along bakeries and vintage tea rooms.  Stop for a drink at the Mermaid Inn and marvel at 600 years of history, or try the similarly historic The George Inn for a drink or two.

What is gilding?

The art of gilding is the time-honoured tradition of applying gold or silver leaf to surfaces such as metal, wood, porcelain, and stone for decorative purposes. At The Ritz, we are great lovers of all things gold, and gilding is an essential method of preserving the heritage interiors of the hotel and creating a glowing atmosphere for our guests. When you walk through the hotel, there is gold everywhere you look; it truly is part of The Ritz’s DNA. From carved wall and ceiling decorations, and highlights on furniture, to striking statues in Two Michelin Star Ritz Restaurant and The Palm Court, The Ritz wouldn’t be The Ritz without this precious and coveted element.

As The Ritz first opened its doors in 1906, it is vital for the heritage of the hotel that we preserve and honour the British craftsmanship that first created the intricate gold features of the hotel and enhance them for the guests of today. A key reason for our guests returning year after year is to admire and enjoy the beauty of our Louis XVI-style interiors, the finishing touch of which is the inimitable shine and glow of the finest 24-carat gold. Mesmerising!

The process of gilding starts with the gilder sanding down the area that will be gilded and repairing any damage, such as chips in wood. Once this is done, the surface is painted to ensure a smooth finish, as any imperfections will be visible once the gold is applied. Next, the size is painted in an even layer over the surface. Size is the special glue used to stick down the gold leaf. Now comes the tricky part. The size must be left to dry partially, and the gilder must use their intuition and experience to determine the perfect moment to start the gold application. The size should be ‘squeaky’ and not fully dried out as you will have missed your golden window of opportunity. It should not be too tacky as the gold won’t look its best in the final result. Mastering the perfect timing is a skill that takes years of experience and is essential to maximise the shininess of such a precious and eye-catching metal.

The final, and of course, most crucial, step is to apply the gold or silver leaf. Gold comes in a variety of forms, and the type used depends on what is being gilded and the environment it is in. For example, at The Ritz, we use the highest-quality 24-carat gold in a bright colour tone to complement the hotel’s interiors.

Our gilder uses three types of gold: gold paint, gold leaf and gold transfer.

The first form of real gold used in the hotel is powdered, which is used to create gold paint for furniture, such as bedside tables or chairs. This is the ideal form to use as these pieces of furniture are used daily, so it is easy to touch up any imperfections with a small brush if necessary. Meanwhile, our gold comes in 24-carat sheets of gold leaf, which is delicately applied to the surface using a fine squirrel hair paintbrush. Patience and a steady hand are a must for this type of gilding! The final iteration used at The Ritz is gold transfer, which comes on a sheet of paper and is then directly applied straight to the surface, which is best for use on an ample, flat space.

Although it may seem complex to the untrained eye, this all comes as second nature to our gilder at The Ritz, whose decades of experience and training in this artisanal craft mean the hotel’s gold and silver never dulls and always sparkles.

The History of Gilding

Gold has long been coveted as a beautiful and valuable metal, perhaps none more so than by the Egyptians. Thousands of years ago, the ancient Egyptians believed gold to be a heavenly metal, and so the art of gilding began. Gold leaf was used to decorate the pharaohs’ tombs and can still be seen today by visitors to the Valley of the Kings.

Gilding was not unique to Egypt, however, as the Chinese used it on pottery and wooden ornaments, while the Greeks and Romans had the Midas touch with their stunning gilded statues. Following on from the Romans, gilding was used to decorate domes, churches and palaces across Europe and remains a beloved architectural feature of some of Europe’s most famous buildings. The gilding and design of the Palace of Versailles’ iconic Hall of Mirrors was indeed an inspirational touchpoint in the design of certain rooms at The Ritz.

In more recent history, the period from approximately 1873 to 1910 is colloquially known as the Gilded Age, a term coined by the writer, Mark Twain. This term relates specifically to the great wealth in the United States of America at the time, following industrialisation and corporate growth. Twain used the term satirically to refer to the (often corrupt) tycoons who would cover their houses with gilded ornaments as a display of wealth.

Gold’s connection to divinity and wealth ensures it remains a material of fascination to us today, as much as it did to people throughout the ages. Our goal at The Ritz is to treat this precious metal with the care and respect it deserves, in honour of it giving the hotel its distinctive glow for over a century.

Our In-House Gilder at The Ritz

The Ritz London’s gilder has been working at the hotel for over 20 years and takes great pride in keeping every shimmer of gold looking its shiniest. It is a relentless task and one that requires great patience, yet thanks to his years of experience, no statue too large or decoration too intricate can stop him in his tracks.

Our gilder’s favourite area of the hotel to gild is the gold fountain in The Palm Court, which is the glittering centrepiece of the room. Every guest who takes afternoon tea at The Ritz can admire his artisanal handiwork in all its golden glory during their visit. The fountain is entirely gilded using The Ritz’s signature 24-carat gold leaf, making it quite the feat of gold gilding, taking hours of precise application to achieve the final glowing result.

One of the more challenging areas of the hotel for our gilder to work on is one of our Signature Suites, the Trafalgar Suite. Featuring both gold leaf gilding and gilded silver across all areas of the suite, it is paramount to retain concentration to ensure every last detail of the Louis XVI style interiors are finished to perfection. The headboard of the bed is gilded every two weeks to touch up any defects and keep it looking immaculate. From the gold paint on the furniture, to gold and silver leaf on the wall embellishments, there is gilding everywhere you turn, which is vital in giving the suite its opulent ambience.

Our gilder’s final words of wisdom for anyone who tries their hand at gilding are to always ensure the environment that you are working in is free from dust and draughts. Any spec of dust that contaminates the pristine surface where the gold is applied will ruin the final look of the gilding, while even the slightest breeze will cause the delicate gold leaf to dissipate into the air. He also advises to use caution when handling the gold leaf, as if you touch it with your fingers, it will disintegrate away! The gold and silver are simply too precious to waste.

A stay at The Ritz wouldn’t be complete without a historical tour of the blue plaques in London, particularly in St James’s and Mayfair.  These plaques commemorate the many philosophers, artists, scientists, writers, politicians, and even royalty who once lived and worked just steps from 150 Piccadilly. 

Sir Henry Pelham

You don’t have to travel far to reach the first stop on our tour. Former Prime Minister Sir Henry Pelham hired architect William Kent in 1743 to build his residence at 22 Arlington Street, St James’s, which is now William Kent House, which adjoins The Ritz.

Frédéric Chopin

Polish composer and pianist, Frédéric Chopin lived just around the corner at 4 St James’s Place. During his time living here he gave his very last public performance at a gala benefit at Guildhall in the City for the Friends of Poland.

Field Marshal Horatio Herbert, Earl Kitchener of Khartoum

Army officer and Secretary of State Lord Kitchener, best known for appearing on the emblematic ‘Your country needs you’ poster of the First World War, lived at 2 Carlton Gardens, St James’s.

General Charles de Gaulle

Just a couple of doors down, French Army Officer and Former President of France, General Charles de Gaulle, set up the Headquarters of the Free French Forces government‑in‑exile in June 1940 at 4 Carlton Gardens, St James’s after the Fall of France in World War II.

Thomas Gainsborough

English portrait painter and landscape artist Thomas Gainsborough lived at 82 Pall Mall, St James’s. Gainsborough was also a founding member of the Royal Academy, located a moment from The Ritz on Piccadilly.

This is just one of the many blue plaques in London dedicated to legendary artists, making the city a paradise for art lovers.

Sir Isaac Newton

Mathematician, physicist, astronomer and philosopher, Sir Isaac Newton lived at 87 Jermyn Street. Newton came to Jermyn Street in 1696, having been appointed as Master of the Mint, a position he held until his death. He originally lived at number 88 until 1700, before moving next door to 87, where he remained until autumn 1709.

Lady Nancy Astor

Politician and the first female MP to sit in parliament, Lady Nancy Astor lived at 4 St James’s Square when she wasn’t at her country residence, Cliveden House, in Buckinghamshire.

Sir Joshua Reynolds

Portrait Painter, Former President of the Royal Academy and rival of Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, lived at 47 Leicester Square. Moving to Leicester Square at just 17 years old, Reynolds built an extension on the house of studios and a gallery. A descendant noted that ‘Everybody in the house painted . . . the coachman and the manservant Ralph and his daughter, all painted, copied and talked about pictures’.

Sir Henry Irving

Strolling over to Mayfair, English stage actor and the first actor to receive a knighthood, Sir Henry Irving lived at 15a Grafton Street. Irving spent the most prosperous years of his career on Grafton Street, where his dining room overlooked the boutiques of Bond Street.

Jean Muir

From the inception of her company, Jean Muir Ltd, in 1966, Fashion Designer and Dressmaker Jean Muir had a grand showroom and office on the first floor of 22 Bruton Street, Mayfair. Here, she hosted house model and muse Joanna Lumley and esteemed clients, including Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench.

Charles X

Charles X, the last Bourbon King of France, resided at 72 South Audley Street, Mayfair, whilst in exile between 1805 and 1814 during the French Revolutionary Wars.

Caroline Norton

Champion of legal rights for women who were separated from their husbands, Caroline Norton was instrumental in passing the 1839 Custody of Infants Act, also known as the first piece of feminist legislation. Norton was also a highly regarded writer during her lifetime. Her blue plaque at 3 Chesterfield Street, Mayfair, marks the house she lived in for over 30 years and is the final stop on our tour.
